6990: Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: National/Federal Level
This week, I searched three organizations' websites looking
for information on job opportunities and requirements at the national level.
NAEYC
The first organization I chose was NAEYC. While starting my
educational journey, I also met NAEYC. I signed up to access resources to
support my assignments on early childhood education topics and educate myself
through research-based work in the field. My membership-supported my
professional career as it provided me with resources for young children and
their families. It also provides opportunities for professional development,
such as annual conferences and workshops. The organization's mission is to
promote and accredit high-quality early learning through practice, policy, and
research for children from birth to age eight (nd).
UNICEF
UNICEF's mission is to serve and strive to support all
children in need worldwide through fundraising, advocacy, and education. I
chose this organization because UNICEF is an organization that does whatever it
takes to meet the vital needs of all children in the world to survive and try
to protect them in every possible way. The United Nations Children's Fund
(UNICEF) works and recruits volunteers in more than 190 countries and
territories to provide health and immunizations, clean water and sanitation,
nutrition, education, emergency aid, and more to save and protect the world's
most vulnerable children. Promoting the well-being of children is a global
responsibility; this organization strives to expand and evolve to provide more
services to families worldwide.
Through the UNICEF Kid Power Exchange, children can come
together and provide meals to families in need in their local community.
Through the activity, they overcome the difficulty of children's access to food
and help families get the nutrients they need. Hunger and food security are
issues that affect every country in the world, including the United States. The
need for food aid has increased significantly during the pandemic. It supports
TeachUNICEF's strategic direction and oversees the development of educational
resources that increase global citizenship and raise awareness of UNICEF's
work. I do not yet know how I will join the UNICEF Kid Power Exchange and
TeachUNICEF centers, but one thing is for sure, I have great respect and faith
in the multifaceted development of research work. It is indisputable that it
was born against the background of the vast amount of research on child
development and learning required to work with these institutions. I would like
to join them in an area where I can volunteer.

THE CHILDREN'S DEFENSE FUND
The last organization I chose was The Children's Defense
Fund (nd), a non-profit organization that advocates for all children,
particularly those who come from cultural diversity, low-income family
resources, and the barriers they create (nd). I particularly appreciated the
goal of this organization to lift children out of poverty, protect them and
provide health, education, and spiritual foundation (Child Defense Fund, n.d.).
I chose Executive Director, which required five years of senior management and
executive leadership with extensive policy advocacy and research (The
Children's Defense Fund, nd).
To be successful, children need quality and healthy homes,
generous income and wealth support, quality health care, ample nutritious food,
good schools, safe neighborhoods, and access to resources and opportunities
that enable them to reach their full potential.
Every child deserves to live in a world where they can
learn, grow and live up to their full potential. The only way to do this is to
confront our existing systems and institutional racism and advance change for
all of our communities, especially Black, Latino and Indigenous children and
their families. Poverty and income inequality deprive children of reliable
access to nutritious food, healthy homes, quality health care, and other
resources to support their healthy development and subsequent success.
The deprivation of millions of children from their basic
needs such as food, shelter, and health care can have devastating and lasting
consequences. Child poverty creates cognitive deficits for young children,
jeopardizes their health and ability to learn, and fuels an intergenerational
cycle of poverty. Child poverty is very costly for our children and our nation
and is neither necessary nor morally justifiable. As a researcher, advocate,
and early childhood expert, it is a service to be a part of these efforts and
help provide quality childcare services to young children and their children. I
would like to participate as a provider, member and/or volunteer.

Thank you for sharing these various Communities of Practice. I also wrote about NAEYC in my blog post. What is your favorite resource from their website? For me, I greatly benefit from their blog posts. I often send them to families looking for additional resources, and I benefit from the content as well.
ReplyDeleteBehice,
ReplyDeleteI have heard of the Children’s Defense Fund before but was unsure of all that they did to progress ECE. I did not realize they had a headquarters here in Texas. I did not see any jobs that I was qualified for but they do have tons of programs that I could be a part of some leading to job opportunities. Thank you for this resource, I am excited to add it to my tool box.

Hi Behice, great section of organizations. I did a research on some of these national organizations and their contributions to social change helping families, children, and communities gain resources and improvement of their life styles. I also choose NAEYC for all their resources and knowledge on early childhood issues, polices an trends. I selected Save the Children as a national amortization that promotes literacy throughout the world.
